For the week 1st to 7th July 2019 I was involved in the [Process] exhibition in Reading. I worked on site for the duration, making and installing, engaging in conversation with the other artists and visitors to the gallery.
Here are snap shots of some of the drawings I made.
[Process] an exhibition by a loose collective of artists with some work being made in situ during the exhibition itself, this exhibition attempts to explore the ways which art is made, how it is shown and how it is seen.

Three of my drawings, including ‘Lovejoys’ above, were included in the London Ultra, 6 – 9 December 2018 at The Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf, Bargehouse Street, South Bank, London SE1 9PH
The London Ultra is a new experimental exhibition format that brings together artists and performers working across a multitude of disciplines in an art extravaganza at London’s iconic Bargehouse.
Visitors are invited to discover a multi-sensory spectacular of artists’ showcases encompassing styles ranging from traditional to eccentric, conceptual to accidental and from minimalist compositions to opulent installations and intriguing abstractions.
Artists from London, across the UK and further afield responded to an open call to show their current work at this 4-day event. Paintings, sculpture, collage and photography are carefully grouped in curated sections, including an Otherworldly Room and the Attica Luminarti, deliberately breaking with conventional definitions and themes.
On 21st-22nd July 2018 I was be involved with a project called ‘Enshrine’, curated by Rekha Sameer, at the Crypt Gallery, St Pancras Parish Church, Euston Road, London NW1 2BA.
I showed drawings that followed on from the Grove Residency. Picture here:
My residency at Grove Projects ran from 9-14 July 2018 with an exhibition on the final day. It was a wonderful opportunity to create new work in a different environment. The residency programme is run by Barbara and David Dougan. Thanks to them for inviting and hosting me.
David has recently published ‘Bury St Edmunds the town built on a myth’ which analyses the legend of St Edmund, the history of the Abbey and the town. This and a tour of the town including the Abbey ruins were my introduction to the location.
This drawing takes a text about Abbot Samson from David’s book. Samson was elected Abbot in 1182 and kept a book of accounts called the Kalendar for raising rents from local people. The drawing includes contemporary details, the view of a local park, a patio table and a beetle that fell on my head one morning.
I also consulted ‘Opus de Miraculus Sancti Edmundi’ by Abbot Samson, originally in Latin but with the miracles helpfully glossed into English by the editor. The miracles of St Edmund were part of the Mediaeval belief system and were used as propaganda for the Abbey. I’m interested in current belief systems and propaganda and their oppressive effects.
I did drawings and took photographs in the town on market day and combined them with text about the miracles, especially in this drawing, ‘Marketplace of Miracles’.
